March 18 2010
Australian War Memorial: Reading Room * note after hours entry through side door (further details below).
The Second World War was a pivotal era in the history of Australian women as an emerging labour force. The history of the Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA) forms a significant part of that story. In 1946 it was considered important to national posterity to permanently archive the records of the Australian Women’s Land Army including the personal service records. Many of these historic records are now held in the National Archives of Australia or the Australian War Memorial. The personal service records for all States except NSW did not survive. This presentation will outline the historical and archival background to the disappearance of these personal service records and discuss recent research into attempting to track their location after the war.
